Just a little time, and a letter only you could write.
The made-up words. The favourite teddy.
The way they see the world this year.
Tell them who they were.
And what it felt like to love them.
Seal it. Place it beside the years before.
Come back when another year has grown.
THE WORDS ARE ALREADY IN YOU
Start with something small. We’ll leave a few gentle prompts; you make the letter theirs.
“What did you say that I never want to forget?”
My little love,
This year, you called butterflies
“flutter-byes”.
I never corrected you.
I think you had it right.
You’re asleep upstairs as I write this.
And I’m already missing who you
were this morning.
All my love, always.

A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING
Absolutely. Start with the child in front of you. You can write about earlier years from the memories you have, or simply begin with this year. A letter written today will still mean the world someday.
You don’t need to capture everything. Begin with one little thing: a funny phrase, a bedtime habit, something that made you proud. Gentle prompts will help you get started, but the words and the memories are yours.
Your first letter begins at birth, Year 0. Then there’s one for every birthday from one through eighteen. Nineteen letters, holding a whole childhood.
